Oops. I looked in more detail at acpi-support when responding to Michelle,
and found another option for you and forgot to update this.
Make sure POST_VIDEO is set in /etc/default/acpi-support:
# Should we attempt to warm-boot the video hardware on resume?
POST_VIDEO=true
