No it isn''t. You may prefer it over other ftp clients, but it's only
one of a number of possible ftp clients out there for you to download.
It does have an advantage, it's GUI oriented, rather than text/command
line based, and that might be a good reason for using it, but not if
it segfaults.

Personally, I use ncftp, I've been using it for years. Works extremely
well, fast, lightweight, and a lot better than plain ftp. Konqueror
(the kde file manager) also is a good ftp client, but as I surmise
from you wanting gftp, you're using Gnome. Still, you can use kde
components inside gnome - as long as you have the right libraries
installed.
