I bit the bullet and unplugged the power to my IDE hard drive. So now the computer has only one 160 GB hard drives. I have both Gutsy and Hardy now running on the one hard drive and loading Hardy was a SNAP! It loaded from the LiveCD just like I expected and the Grub has Hardy first and Gutsy second.
The problem with 2 hard drives is a problem with my BIOS. It is just a pure PAIN to use this computer with one IDE and one SATA hard drives. Now I have one SATA and it is easy to
use.
Now to set up this Hardy like my Gutsy is now.

I have some problems reading sh_oofshore's messages because they are send as html messages which adds a lot of unnecessary garble and makes them almost unreadable in my news client. Your problems will be solved if you unsubscribe from the mailing list and subscribe to the newsgroup gmane.linux.ubuntu.user, as I have done. It makes reading selected messages much easier. My problem, and I think a problem for many others on this list, will be solved if you refrain from posting in html.

Run top or htop and see what is using up the cpu cycles. If the fan is running fast and the laptop still overheats, then the cpu is active. I had this problem once with an IBM laptop when the fan was not quite up to snuff to keep the cpu temp down. -- Smoot Carl-Mitchell System/Network Architect smoot@tic.com +1 480 922 7313 cell: +1 602 421 9005

It a Hardy thing. And probably related to this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pam/+bug/216990 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pam
You might want to review those, as there was an issue with the auth logs being spammed if libpam-smbpass wasn't installed, or if the pam_smbpass.so related lines in /etc/pam were not commented
out.

Ubuntu stopped loading after I removed data from a logical partition. I ran a grub fixer and now the menu won't load (menu.lst). Here's what I have done so far.
$ sudo mkdir -p /media/disk
$ sudo mount /dev/sda5 /media/disk
sudo nano -w /media/disk/boot/grub/menu.lst
Changed all occurrences of (hd0,6) to (hd0,4) (I also tried 5 because sudo grub find /boot/grub/stage1 yielded (hd0,5)). Then
grub root (hd0,4)
also tried 5 Then setup (hd0)
When I used 4 I got error 17.
When 5 I got:
grub> root (hd0,5)
grub> setup (hd0) Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 16 sectors are embedded. succeeded Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+16 p (hd0,5)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.lst"... failed
Error 12: Invalid device requested
So I got farther but still no banana.
Need some help please! Thanks Gary -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/attachments/20080614/42434f26/attachment-0001.htm

Hardy Heron: There is no ?Fonts?folder under ?Systems-Preferences?. ?Fonts? is a tab under ?Systems-Preferences-Appearances?. The ?Details? button takes me to a dead end in the ?Font Rendering Details? window. There is no way to the ?Go to Fonts? window.
How do I add or delete fonts in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy???
Thank you for your help. Raul

Well, considering the package maintainers are Ubuntu Core Devel, you're talking about the same people. Sure you could file a bug in Launchpad.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs
It might not get high priority, but it's a really easy fix.

Top ought to tell you alright, if something is hogging all the cpu cycles, wouldn't the system logs show what was causing the errors? Xorg takes the
most cpu time on my system but it never remains the same. It drops off to nearly nothing at times and jumps up while opening screens. I run KDE on my machine so have KSystemLog but surely Gnome has something similar.
