I've noticed if you logout, and log back in using failsafe gnome session it works.

Funky stuff.

Me too!  I can't explain it. I've installed Ubuntu 8.04 on 3 machines,
2 for me, 1 for friend.

On 1 of them, the icons do not appear on the desktop at log in time.
However, if you insert a cd or access a drive, then the icons do
appear for the devices that have been accessed.

As far as I can tell, the users have nothing to do with it.
