Personally I don't see much use in backing up the /var/log directory. On
one off my computers, which is also a web and mail server, i find it
usefull to keep a backup of the /etc/ directory for the configuration.
But that configuration doesn't change that much, so a backup once or
twice a year might be sufficient. Further, if you have a database server
like Postgres or MySql running, it might be usefull to make regular
backups of the data. I have about 20 years of administration in a
Postgres database (started once on a Amiga 500 with Superbase) and I make
regular backups of my databases with pg_dump and keep those on 3
computers in my /home directory.
