I run VMware Server 1.0.4 on Poweredge 1955 Blades on debian etch amd64 without any problems. The reasoning is that we often run 8GB+ ran on the host and then split it up on 32bit guests such that it's easier to use balance the processor usage.

I've used the vmware-package backport [1] to create a vmware-server package and I'm happy with it.
