Thanks for all responses.

I compared two systems with same upto date distros.
I compared different distros on the same hard ware (DL 580 G4), which
got 4 dual core processors with almost 8 GB RAM.

My concern is about: different distros giving different results on the
same box (dl 580 g4). Opensuse 10.2 on this box gives me 2m40s;
latest rhel5, rhel5.1, centos5.1 gave me 8m 40 seconds.

We have another stand alone dell box, which got 1 dual-core xeon
processor with 2 gb ram, loaded with opensuse 10.2. This machine gives
me 2m45s.

Right now, that box is loaded with fedora core 8.

We got similar DL 580 G4 loaded with rhel 4, release 6. Same abysmal
performance with that program.

On rhel4,

$ rpm -qif /usr/include/math.h

Summary   : Header files for development using standard C libraries.
Description :
The glibc-headers package contains the header files necessary
for developing programs which use the standard C libraries (which are
used by nearly all programs). If you are developing programs which
will use the standard C libraries, your system needs to have these
standard header files available in order to create the
executables.

Install glibc-headers if you are going to develop programs which will
use the standard C libraries.
