I need some help with sendmail

My problem is that sendmail just sends out all email to the SMTP smart
host without even consulting the aliases file, even if it is for a local
account.

Firstly sendmail is the default one as in a default install
I modified the aliases file to send all of root's emails to an email
account on another domain.
I added the line "+ smtp:[mail_def]" to the mailertable and built the
hash table.
mail_def translates to an ip address in the hosts file and I can ping
both as well as telnet to them on port 25

The problem is that when I send an email to root@(protected)
or root@(protected)
directly to the smtp smart host without consulting the aliases file. The
smart host then ends up receiving an email from the machine adressed to
root@(protected)
own names either.

I have checked that the hosts file is configured properly with all of
the machine's aliases and that hostname -f and hostname -s return the
correct results and that all of them are reachable.

I have a similar configuration on another machine except for one
difference, the other machine is accessible from the internet and it's
IP address is configured on our internet DNS servers with reverse
lookups. This machine on the other hand will only be accessible from
inside our network.

Thanks in advance
