Hmmm.  How did you set the smart host? Generally all you should do is
uncomment the SMART_HOST line in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc, fill in the
right value and restart sendmail. Sounds as though you might have been
tinkering with LOCAL_RELAY and MAIL_HUB instead.
