Should have been in bugzilla; the same problem was in Fedora 8 and is
closed, presumably fixed. I've entered a bug against RHEL5 (citing C5, I
don't have RHEL itself) referencing the Fedora bug.
I intend to buy another (they're coming up at an auction), so wanted to
confirm it acutally works. Found lots of hits, some my reports and
associated correspondence, some "this box is a lemon" which I know isn't
exactly true, some saying acpi=off.
I have one running Fedora/Rawhide (the disks vanish altogether with
2.6.25 kernels) and its performance seems fine, though I don't really
know what to expect in disk performance.

Since this is a corporates' box, it was a little surprised to reproduce
the problem in C5.1.
The workaround in Bugzilla is "pci=nomsi, nommconf" and that works on C5
(and Knoppix).
A "me too" from a user of genuine RHEL5 to
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=441615 wouldn't hurt.
