Maybe not of help to you, but I just picked up a SunFire X4100 server
w/ the "Integrated Lights-Out Manager" (ILOM), which essentially does
this, and then some; I can:
- Hard reset the machine
- Power on the server after a power outage
- View and modify BIOS settings
- Access the serial console
- Plus lots more hardware monitoring & access (temperatures, etc.)
... all by ssh into the ILOM, which is active whenever the machine has
power applied. This is my first experience with Sun x64 hardware, and
I'm pretty impressed.

BTW, I was able to get this server because I work at a college,
utilizing the Sun matching grant for education:
http://www.sun.com/edu/matchinggrant. Fantastic for edu.

Regards,
David
