I'm having trouble getting the syntax of an rsync exclude file right.

I want to exclude all of the directories and subdirectories in a directory
tree that are named "TMP" (including one in the top-level of the tree),
and have the following in my exclude file:

- TMP/

Seems simple enough, but it isn't working. What have I done wrong? Thanks.
