I have a similar problem, so can confirm, although I've only found I can't
run Konqueror as root..

No DBUS session running. But I can SU to root in KDE4, only I can't use any
display managers to log in graphically and there is no group for GPM or my
user account. I have to use startx and start kde (or any other wm) from an x
terminal.

Plus the last 2 kernels won't boot, fail at swtchroot.
