I was going by this inclusion with the latest realtek linux driver
-- Azalia controller --ALC880 ALC882 ALC260 ALC262 ALC883
ALC885 ALC888
--- Intel ICH6 ICH7 ---------
snd-hda-intel
--- ATI chipset -----
snd-atiixp
The other thing that was causing /adding to the the odd sound behaviour
I was having is the this was a clean (except for /home) install with a
new MSI MOBO.
The onboard snd for the mobo is the ALC888 which also uses
snd-hda-intel
At any rate I am not currently set-up to use hdmi audio so have
disabled it and am using an Xmystique (cmedia) pci card instead of
the ALC888
