The binary driver has a -latest metapackage, which is always installed
by XFdrake. This is what causes it to get updated. If the situation were
as you wrote, everyone running 2008 Spring with an NVIDIA card would
currently have broken X, which is clearly not the case (I don't have a
mob of angry NVIDIA card owners beating down my door).

In any case, the situation you outline in this mail has nothing at all
to do with the source package. Even if the source package weren't
present, the outcome would be the same.
