I you look in /etc/X11/xinit.d/40compositing-wm you'll see what we do.
We essentially override KDEWM env var which the KDE startup proceedure
should look at and honour.
It seems that this is not the case in KDE4 although I've had mixed
results when trying to get it to work!
The config inside KDE itself to allow starting of compiz, I've no idea
how it works. We do not run compiz directly in order to cope with Xgl
and the overriding of LD_LIBRARY_PATH etc. needed in this case. I've not
looked at the code in KDE to start compiz, but I suspect it will need
patching in some capcity.
