I'm answering my own question, strictly for archival purposes to save someone
else time in the future. As for the rest of the thread, I'm giving up until
4.1 goes final. I don't have the time or the patience to mess with this right
now.

To duplicate kde3's "konsole --type su" capability, create a new profile in
konsole (menubar>Manage Profiles>New Profile). Use the command
line /bin/bash -c "su -".
