Maybe not totally related, but here mplayer just locks when trying to
play through pulseaudio.

Syslog:
Jun 19 17:48:16 rhapsody pulseaudio[4849]: module-alsa-sink.c: Error
opening PCM device front:0: Device or resource busy

fuser /dev/snd/*
/dev/snd/controlC0:  4849
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   4940m

ps -ax | egrep '(4940|4849)'
4849 ?     S<sl  0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize
--log-target=syslog
4940 ?     Sl   0:01 /usr/bin/knotify4

Just spoke with Helio and the default kde4 configuration is choosing the
soundcard instead of pulseaudio as default device.
