I noticed that Mandriva, as many others mainstream distributions, is providing
download links for major releases of big projects like KDE for stable release.
For example for KDE 4.1, there are Mandriva packages listed on KDE project page
: http://download.kde.org/binarydownload.html?url=/stable/4.1.0/Mandriva/
However adding the FTP as a media is not that easy as you need to :
- find the right mirror
- copy paste the whole FTP URL and feed it to urpmi.addmedia
- etc...
What about using the --mirrorlist of urpmi.addmedia ?
For example an URL like
http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/kde4.1/basic.'$RELEASE'.'$ARCH'.list
could
provide the list of KDE 4.1 mirrors for Mandriva.
Like easyurpmi.zarb.org, this could even be done by providing a simple
button on which the user just
need to click to add the closest mirror automatically ( urpmi media info file ).
This could be done for big projects like KDE, gnome, or whatever else projects
for which Mandriva may provide packages list on the project homepage.
This will allow users to easily add new repositories easily. Of
course, task metapackage should be also
provided to allow the user to install all the needed packages
afterwards easily. Please note that doing all of this
doesn't imply that Mandriva will provide support for theses packages,
it's just a convenient way to add the packages.
This coudlbe seen like the 1-click install of OpenSuse as seen on kde
4.1 info page ( http://www.kde.org/info/4.1.0.php )
and on opensuse dedicated page : http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/KDE4
