Disregard my previous post.
Pulseaudio was not the cause of the problem.
This system has an onboard intel audio which I have disabled in the
BIOS and instead use a c-media Xmystique pci card.
For some reason after my last re-boot the snd_hda_intel as well as
snd_cmipci was being loaded during alsa start.
I removed and blacklisted snd_hda_intel and sound is well again.
