My solution to simplify Gentoo...
waltdnes@(protected)
sys-libs/pam
sys-apps/dbus
sys-apps/hal
You'll have to do a manual depclean (very carefully) and
revdep-rebuild, but it's worth the effort to purify your Gentoo system.
