Might be worth to try the following:
emerge -tva -D x11-base/xorg-x11 x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810
revdep-rebuild -i -tva -X

Also, beware of the 2* series of xf86-video-i810. Personally, I've
noticed regressions. Might be reasonable to try a pre-2 version, say
1.7.4.
