HP MSA30 Storage 2006-05-27 - By Post, Mark K
Back I did an lspci command, and what shows up as the SCSI controller it is supposed to be hooked up to is: 16:01.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI (rev 07) 16:01.1 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI (rev 07)
When the systems were built, these cards were in the boxes, so the drivers for them are being loaded. I'm seeing these message in the kernel ring buffer: Fusion MPT base driver 2.06.16.02 Copyright (c) 1999-2005 LSI Logic mptbase: Initiating ioc0 bringup ioc0: 53C1030: Capabilities={Initiator,Target} mptbase: Initiating ioc1 bringup ioc1: 53C1030: Capabilities={Initiator,Target} mptbase: 2 MPT adapters found, 2 installed. Fusion MPT SCSI Host driver 2.06.16.02 scsi0 : ioc0: LSI53C1030, FwRev=01032700h, Ports=1, MaxQ=203, IRQ=17 scsi1 : ioc1: LSI53C1030, FwRev=01032700h, Ports=1, MaxQ=203, IRQ=18
But, no indication of any disks being found. Unfortunately, these systems are very remote from where I am, so I can't just look to make sure things are really cabled the way they're supposed to be. If I'm getting these results, but no disks, should that be the next thing to verify?
Thanks,
Mark Post

That's actually a function of what SCSI Controller is inside the system, it's nothing to do with the MSA30, just presents 14 SCSI targets (one per installed disk) to the controller.
You don't say what the server hardware is, but assuming they are attached via either the onboard controller or an addon SmartArray card to an HP Proliant Server (e.g. DL36* DL38* DL58*) , you'll need the cciss kernel module. RedHat provide one and so does the HP Proliant Support Pack.
I recommend installing the HP PSP anyway, because it will do the monitoring of the array and alert you to environmental failures. It also provides the hpacucli (HP Array Configuration Utilities, Command Line Interface) which will allow you to build arrays out of your disks.
