How do I find out the cause for the hang?

Are you using NFS mounted home directories?  We have our /home directory
mounted to a network appliance.  If for any reason your NFS mount becomes
"invalid" it'll cause logins to freze.  We've fixed it by doing a
mount/umount on the directory.
