We ran a up2date on a few of machines before seeing this thread and
stopping the work.  In addition to stopped daemons and missing symlinks,
we found that some system accounts in /etc/passwd were removed and _not_
replaced:

   named
   rpcuser
   rpcuser
   nfsnobody
   nfsnobody
   nscd
   nscd

These groups were also deleted:

   named
   rpcuser
   rpcuser
   nfsnobody
   nfsnobody
   nscd
   nscd
