I only got burned on four systems. On those, I restored /var/lib/rpm
(after moving aside the old one), rpm -e pvm, updated again, cleaned up
various .rpm{save,orig,new} files, made sure essentials were set to
start on boot (nfs, sshd), rebooted and everything looks good.

Still makes you wonder how this can happen though.
