But if you want to allocate more than 4gb to a *single* process, then you would be required to use the hugemem kernel.
With 8GB of RAM, the hugemem kernel is ususally not necessary. It becomes recommended/required (due to the memory map that the kernel keeps in low kernel memory and the resulting exhaustion of low memory) at around 16GB or so (the number may be higher).
