FC4 has a bug that can cause this with certain hardware (eg, Intel
82865G integrated graphics controllers). Please see bug reports at:

Replacing /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a with a different version
fixes it. As I recall the bug reports direct you to where you can
download the "good" libvgahw.a. Alternatively, you can get a copy of it
by anonymous ftp from sputnik.smc.edu, pub directory. Fixed a couple
classrooms' worth of afflicted machines, hope it fixes yours.
