RHEL3 system hanging

RHEL3 system hanging

I am running postgresql database server for a mailing list server. Just one
week ago, I added a 200G SATA disk and 2G more memory to the system. The
original system has 120G SATA disk and 2G memory. I only have one Pentinum 4
CPU in the box. Even after applying the latest kernel 2.4.21-47.0.1.EL, I
already have two times of system hanging since last Saturday. Note that I am
still using the initial 2GB swap space.

I actually checked the message and cron log files under /var/log for what
happened. The system hanging appears to happen sometime after the postgresql
database server tried to create a bunch of temporary tables using some
implicit index. I am not sure it needs to use a lot of space. I also found
that I have the same message notice before, but I did not have the system
hanging issue.

Is there any idea how to fix this issue? Though the latest RHEL 3 security
advisory mentioned one flaw directly related to this issue, I assumed it's
been taken care by the latest update and I am running a single cpu version.

Thanks,

Yi
