Running a SMARTCTL Query reports the Device does NOT support SMART??

The 160 GIG Seagate is accessed via SCSI Emulation (not sure if that is a SATA, RHEL3 or DELL "Thing"?), should that affect whether a SATA Disk can return SMART Inforation???
