What kind of card is it?  It does not matter if the cable is plugged in
during installation - it will configure the interface for DHCP by
default if the card is supported.  My guess is that you have unsupported
hardware, and either it will not work (there is no Linux driver for it),
or you will have to load a third-party driver for the card.

The output of lspci would be helpful.
