Uh, did you check to make sure you have a link from where you installed
JDK to FF's plugins directory?  You know:

  # cd /usr/lib/firefox-2 (See http://fox-2.ora-code.com).0.2/plugins
  # ln -s /path/to/jdk/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
    libjavaplugin_oji.so

Does "about:plugins" show Java as being installed?
