Can you just do a zcat <filename>.Z > <filename> ?

This doesn't seem to work, it just spits out a ton of the following kinds of
characters, and doesn't give me the tar file it has compressed or the
filename I specified to uncompress it to.

    ??     ?????|?>M???W
