  | | | Upgrading Kernel? | Upgrading Kernel? 2002-06-30 - By Vincent
Back I just made my 3rd purchase of redhat. I began with 6.1 and then 6.2 and now 7.3.
As happy as i am with redhat, i do have some concerns and question about kernel upgrades.
1) first of all, i updated my default kernel to 2.4.18-5 (i think) but then my nvidia drivers wouldnt compile for it anymore. It seems thatit cannot "stat " some NVidia module or something like that. I have the .src.rpms from the NVidia website which includes the kernel package and the GLX package.
2) so.... i decided to revert back to the default kernel that comes with the CD. But i saw that there was a .athlon.rpm and since i 'm running an athlon processor i decided to install that one. I rpm -Uv it but when my system starts up it still says i686. Is that normal?
3) i want to be able to update my kernel whenever i wish... but.... the configuration is so overwhelming. where can i get the default configuration for the redhat kernel and just load it when i do my "make xconfig "? That way i retain all the default settings. would that work? or are there certain configurations in the redhat kernels that are not compatible with kernels i would download from kernel.org?
