rh7.3 and hdparm

rh7.3 and hdparm

I have been unable to get dma set on any of my hard drives running under
a new pentium4 system. I upgraded to rh7.3 at the same time that I
upgraded my hardware from an old pentium2 system. When attempting any
form of hdparm -d call, I get

/dev/hda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)

Looking at the hdparm -I infomration, it seems that despite the error
message, when I set the X34 and X66 flags, it seems to switch over to
the seetings, but performace (hdparm -t /dev/hda) remains largely
unaffected.

In my old configuration (same harddrive, only piece not upgraded) I ran
hdparm -c1 -d1 -m16 -u1 -p4 /dev/hda and managed to get 22Mb/s off my
hard drive, with this new system I only manage 4.5 Mb/s... system
performance needless to say unacceptable.

I suspect that the issues might lie somewhere between the kernel and the
motherboard, but I have little knowledge (although eager to learn) in
this field.

What do I need to do to find the source of the problem and the cure ?

Thanks fer yer time and efforts
