wvdial connects but nothing communicates

I have a winmodem (conexant hcfpci) with a good Linux driver that works well
with the kppp dialer in RH 7.3. But, I have no success using wvdial. I can
get wvdial to connect, but once connected, nothing communicates (email, web
browser, or shell commands). I 've tried adding "Stupid Mode = yes " and "New
PPD = yes " to wvdial.conf, but they don 't help. My /etc/ppp/options file is
empty. Is there some other trick required for RH 7.3 to make this work?

Here 's my wvdial log:
