Random Lockups under Disk Load

Random Lockups under Disk Load

2002-08-23       - By Joshua Andrews

HI,

I have installed a new IBM Deskstar 60G drive to solve some problems I
encountered during the upgrade from 7.1 to 7.3.

The problem is I am getting drive lockups under load where the drive LED
is always on though the mouse and keyboard still function as do any
programs that are in memory. Any network file transfers from the system
are sure to cause a lockup and sometimes just starting X or opening
netscape will do it. The only thing of note in the logs is that there are
many more APIC errors than I am used to seeing.

The drive is a single drive on a hpt366 controller. I updated the kernel
to the most recent 2.4.18-10 and the lockups seem less frequent but the
system is still totally unstable.

I adjusted the elevator values down to 4096/8192 with elvtune but it had
no effect on what is causing the lockups.

Are there known issues with htp366, IBM drives and 2.4.18 smp kernel? Any
ideas?

Thank you,
Joshua Andrews
