I got a little carried away with deleting and accidentally deleted the original message. This is an attempt to reply to it.
The problem was that as user was ID was created and set to the same group as root. When logged on the user ID 's prompt was just $ and not the <user >@ <host >$ that is common. I hope I got this close.
First, check the shell that this user has set in /etc/passwd. I bet it 's something like /bin/pdksh or other. Changing this to /bin/bash should fix this.
On the point of making a user which has root 's privileges, you 'd be better off using sudo.
