Hello,
Probably a simple question for U Linux gurus...
I installed the latest RH IMAP package and enabled pop3 via the
etc/xinetd.d/ipop3 file. Although I can now log onto the server and get a
message via MS outlook that the POP3 mail box has been checked OK with no MS
Outlook errors anymore (after enabling pop3 on the server), I am still not
downloading any e-mails from the server even though I have sent several.
I 'm using Linux 7.3. One thing - I have read Kabirs �Red Hat Linux 7
Server? book and in chapter 11 where he explains how to configure e-mail,
he says to add a line to the inetd.conf file (page 302), but after doing a
search on the server for this file I can not find it. I thought this was
strange because the RPM install came back with no errors and apparently I
assume that all required mods for IMAP are installed onto the server,
otherwise I would have got error messages. I later found out from RH
support that this file is no longer used in 7.3.
Do I have to enable the server as SMTP Sendmail too? In order to use POP3?
Do I need to set up separate e-mail boxes on the server for each user for
name based or IP based hosting? I have not done that either, and was
wondering if that is why I can�t download e-mail? In Kabir�s Book he does
not cover setting up e-mail file folders for POP3 accounts, only for SMPT.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also if you can point me to
step by step instructions as to how to set up POP3 e-mail accounts for both
name based and IP based hosting I would greatly appreciate it.
Finally, At RH tech support�s (below) suggestions from their e-mail to me
today after our phone conversation, the last thing I tried was uninstall and
I got the error "uninstall: command not found " when trying to un install the
sendmail-8.11.6-15 file...
"Attached are two files sendmail.mc and sendmail.cf and here are the
instructions on what to do with them:
(1) put the sendmail.mc file in the directory /etc/mail (over write the
copy of sendmail.mc that you have there).
(2) make sure the file permissions are correct by typing
"chmod 644 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc "
(3) type "m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/sendmail.cf "
(4) then restart sendmail "service sendmail restart "
sendmail should now work.
If for some reason it does not, please try the following:
(1) put sendmail.cf in your /etc directory (over writing your copy of
/etc/sendmail.cf)
(2) set the permissions on /etc/sendmail.cf:
"chmod 644 sendmail.cf "
(3) then restart sendmail "service sendmail restart "
if for some reason that does not work. uninstall and reinstall
(1) uninstall "rpm -e sendmail-8.11.6-15 "
(2) install "rpm -Uvh sendmail-8.11.6-15 "
This should work for you.
