xserver crash

xserver crash

Uh-oh...
I logged out to let my sister have the machine for a few minutes
to check her e-mail and as soon as I did the xserver crashed.
I have never had this problem. I have only been using linux for about a
year, so I 'm a little clueless what to do.
I did try to allow the machine to reconfigure and restart x,
but it could not.
I 'm afraid that without the graphical environment I 'm a little lost.
I tried:
& XFree86-config
and a few other variations, but that didn 't work (stop laughing at me).
So...I suppose I might use my iBook and jump on redhat on freenode
to get some help, but any suggestions would be most welcomed.
(Had to boot Yech! windows 98 on this box to send this message. I haven 't booted windows in about 9 months...this sucks.)
I 'm afraid that I don 't even know where to begin looking to solve this issue, but if you can guide me to ask the right questions, perhaps together we can find the problem.
I did look at the root mail in Pine and it seemed like it was saying
there were db4 and dbd3 errors, and, to me this seems odd, maybe a problem with yum? I don 't know what yum has to do with the xserver...
I just thought yum was a nifty pkg mgr tool. I only downloaded it about a week or two before this upgrade.
Anyway, I can find my way into pine to check those messages again, but
I don 't know what to look for or how to interpret most of what is there.
Any suggestions would be most highly appreciated.
I 'm just so shocked. The install went great and there have been no xserver issues for the past 3 days (since upgrade).
I thought this only happened to Debian systems...
