I ran "make rpm ".

After much time, the build fails with this:
...
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.4.209custom '
+ cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage
/var/tmp/kernel-2.4.209custom-root/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-9custom

My understanding was making the custom kernel as an rpm allows the Red
Hat upgrade mechanism to continue working, and I thought I 'd try that.

Can anyone tell me what to do to make "make rpm " work, or perhaps what I
should be doing instead?

Cheers,
Bret
