hey i just did this for my new canon s45
basically i updated the libraries and hotplug to recognize
my camera, but used the existing version of the gtkam as shipped
with redhat
if anyone see 's a problem with my approach
i would love to hear about it
i am running rh9
here is how i got my camera to work
downloaded the latest libgphoto2
untarred and ran configure like this
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
then ran make
============================
never did 'make install '
or download anything else
==============================
then went into dir
libgphoto2-2.1.1/camlibs/canon/.libs
copied the file libgphoto2_canon.so to
/usr/lib/gphoto2/2.1.0
(first i backed up the old one, just in case)
i did the same thing for
libgphoto2-2.1.1/camlibs/ptp
( copy the .so file)
to get the experimental ptp support
now my camera still wasnt recognized by hotplug
i got instructions from here

what i had to do
cd /etc/hotplug
gphoto2 --print-usb-usermap > usb.usermap
i never had to mess with the
/etc/hotplug/usb/usbcam
file because i am running gtkam in kde
now i rehooked my camera up
and 'tail -f /var/log/messages '
showed hotplug as recognizing it properly
it worked for me in normal mode and ptp mode
with canon s45
i love my camera it is so much better than
my old toshiba 2.1mp camera i had
