Jake,I think older listers would suggest us to avoid topreplies,this helps the mail-archives,at least as I understood ;-)
Ok,I'm sorry if I've not been of any help for you,by the way you could give a try to omit the search and domain strings inside resolv.conf that are automatically extracted from the machine /etc/sysconfig/network file.
Then try to read again docs and man for your DNS (BIND,tinydns,or what it is) or even try to post a more detailed configuration settings of your machine on the list so that more skilled people can give you the right clue. It could be you should set up a master and a slave zone (?)
