There are a couyple files to check. There's nsswitch for the localhost search order, hosts to list all the machines on the localnet, host.conf does the same more basic functions that nsswitch does, resolv.conf lists nameservers to find other hosts, and if you run dns set up then all the bind9 or dbjdns configs to mess with.
If you don't have dns set up for the localnet, then you need to have all hosts listed in hosts.
