Quoting the Promise readme.txt:
The disk image file used to install Linux Redhat7.3 with the SuperTrak SX6000. These drivers support Linux kernel 2.4.18-3 UP/SMP and bigmem-2 (See http://mem-2.ora-code.com).4.18-3.
Promise has a history of having closed source drivers and only releasing them for the kernel's shipped by RH. Unless an open-source driver will work with that card, you are SOL and can't upgrade your kernel.
