Heh. I could really use those $500 to buy a 3Ware card if someone is
willing to spare them :-D

Bear in mind that not all ATA RAID controllers or chipsets are as flaky and
poorly (proprietary kernel modules) supported as the Promise ones. For
instance, I've only heard great feedback regarding all 3Ware products,
although I haven't been able to afford any myself.
