Code correcting the problem first appears in the kernel version 2.4.23, as released by the kernel maintainer.
RedHat applied the same fix to their patched kernel, which began its life as 2.4.20, and has had about 24 rounds of patches (some of which, at least, are now in the prime kernel tree) applied by RedHat personnel.
