Back Sounds like I could exchange my kernels.org 2.4.22 kernel for the Fedora kernel for my Shrike system... anybody know of an unpleasant side-effect to that?

Correct. You installed a different kernel, so you are responsible for either upgrading or patching it.

RH hasn't shipped a vulnerable 2.4.22 kernel, so therefore has no need to patch it. Fedora Core *did* ship with a 2.4.22 kernel, but it wasn't vulnerable.
