7.3 on Gateway P120 queries

Hi,

I have installed 7.3 on a very old Gateway P120.

This has an ISA soundcard.

It also has a QIC-3020 (See http://QIC-3020.ora-code.com) floppy tape.

I have several problems at the moment, and I suspect they may be
inter-related :-(

(1) I can get the sound card working with sndconfig, which updates
'modules.conf'. However when I reboot, 'modules.conf' is over-written with
the original (non-working) values and the working configuration is moved to
'.bak'. The soundcard is allocated with an IRQ of 5, which conflicts with my
USB card. Any idea why the 'module.conf' values keep getting over-written?
Supplementary - the manual for the sound card states that it can use IRQ
5,7,9,10,11,15 but 'sndconfig' only offered 5,7,9. Any idea why this is?
If I can sort out the problem with 'modules.conf' can I then just edit this
file to use the higher interrupts?

(2) The floppy tape is recognised when I insert a tape (at least when it
whirrs, there are log entries in /var/log/messages) but whenever I try to
access /dev/ftape I am told that the device does not exist. Any ideas?

(3) The USB card only partly configures. AFAIK the first root hub configures
O.K. but the second one fails. It is trying to use IRQ 9 which is also
allocated to the Ethernet card. Can PCI cards share an IRQ (e.g. 9) under
Linux?

I am currently waiting for an Amazon load of books about Linux but when I
skimmed them in Waterstones they didn't give an obvious quick answer.

Any help gratefully received.

Regards

David Roberts
