memtest86 comes with a pre-compiled image so you don't NEED to make it.

The makefile has a target named "install-bin", so all  you really
NEED to do is unpack the archive, put a floppy in fd0 and (as root)
type "make install-bin" and it'll take care of the rest of it
for you.
